Three sentence movie reviews: Swiss Army Man
“I’m not sure what review I read, but that was NOT the movie I thought it was going to be,” said my movie-going companion. I was well aware what I was getting into, having listened to/read several reviews and I was interested to see where I landed on the like/don’t like spectrum. I found this to be the most unique movie I’ve seen in some amount of time, but this quality did not make for a pleasurable viewing experience.
Cost: $4.00
Where watched: Academy Theater with S. North.

I’m looking forward to this myself. Also can’t help but noticed movie ticket only cost $4? Over here on weekdays it is easily $7.50 without any concession. Don’t get me started on the popcorns.
Second-run theaters are cheaper. First run is more than $10.00, usually, although if you go to first-run theaters on Tuesdays (or Sundays, depending on the theater) it’s only $5.00.
Amazingly, there is still a way to see a movie in Portland, for $3.00. It involves going to the Laurelhurst (a great second-run theater) before 6pm.
We are very lucky in our theaters. The popcorn remains pricey. Although usually the second-run theaters also serve pizza.
This is interesting, I enjoy these sorts of comparisons. I suppose after the currency conversion S$7.50 is around US$5.50. I went to double check and realise it is mostly now S$8.50 or so onwards without any concession. I looked up what second-run theatre means..and I don’t think there are any proper ones here. The only closest I can think of is an independent cinema here who runs European, artsy, old, independent (or sometimes all of the above) films.
Also very interesting. The average Singaporean goes to the theater 4.2 times per year? Sometimes I can hit that number in a month. Can the internet tell me the average for Americans? It can. Hmm. I went over to IMDB to read the description. I have to say that I’m intrigued. I may give this a shot at some point, like when it turns up on Netflix so I don’t have to pay any extra.
If you do, let me know what you think. I think parts of this movie will stick with me for some time. It’s inventive and everyone involved was very committed to their roles. I’m interested to see what the directors do next.
