3SMReviews: Birdman

 In Three Sentence Movie Reviews

Excellent acting combined with an intriguing plot unfortunately collide with two elements that really didn’t work for me: the sometimes overwhelming drum solo score and the simulated single take.  Overall, it was more failed artsy than successful artsy.  Although Emma Stone was mesmerizing* and I remembered why Edward Norton was my movie boyfriend for so many years.

Cost: $8.00
Where watched: Hollywood Theater with Matt

Yeah, it didn’t quite work for me either. And I too hated the drum thing. I thought Emma Stone looked awful in this, exactly in the way that she was supposed to look awful, although (and I say this as someone who loves her) I wasn’t wowed by her performance. Ed Norton, on the other hand, was phenomenal. My friends and I had a lengthy discussion afterward about how annoying it is that he’s such a great actor but such a jerk IRL.

It’s funny that you felt that way. I REALLY loved this movie. I thought it was artsy that worked.

The writer that is developing in me is a little appalled by the sentence structure in my three sentence movie review comment. And yet, now that I have endeavored to start another comment, no additionally urbane comments seem to be at the tip of my brain. I did rather enjoy the Times Square sequence with the marching band!
