Three sentence movie reviews: The Heartbreak Kid (2007)
Unlike the original, this movie fleshed out the back story and pointed me in a direction, so I knew what was supposed to be funny. There were the usual Farrelly Brothers gratuitous touches* and Ben Stiller did his uncomfortable Ben Stiller thing.** Not the worst way to spend two hours, but not the best one either.

Where watched: at home.
*Older woman in hot tub with breasts the size of basketballs.
**However, it was enjoyable watching the scenes he did with his father.

Aha! There it is! My baited breath is captured now.
Ben Stiller is so hit and miss for me. Some of his stuff really makes me laugh (Dodgeball continues to be an all-time favorite) and some of it makes me nearly cringe to death (Meet the Parents) and some of it is just plain stupid (do not get the love for Zoolander). Watching is movies is like playing Russian roulette.
I noticed there was going to be a showing of Reality Bites at the Hollywood Theater this weekend. I think he’s particularly good in that, probably mostly because in the movie he’s a young successful guy trying too hard, which is what he was at the time. Although he was cool then too. He had that Mtv show that people liked.
I think if you like awkward comedy, he’s a king. He’s very good at being the poor dude that a lot of shit happens to. That totally worked in There’s Something About Mary and completely drove me crazy in Meet the Parents. Someone who likes him better than me should figure out what makes it work and not.
